Why Don’t We Stay

I know it’s late
I know you’re weary
The stars were above us
As you lay with me

Your arm against mine
The grass pricked our skin
We’re longing for shelter
From all that we see

That’s Orion’s Belt
You pointed faraway
You told me its history
We’ll never forget that day

We’ve got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
We’ve got tonight babe
Why don’t we stay.

Not Counting

“There’s a cafe here but I don’t see a name.”

“Oh… I’ll come down now.”

She stood at the lift lobby and waited as people went about their activities around her. It’s been so long since they met – she wondered if it would still feel the same as back when.

After what felt longer than a mere few minutes, one of the lift doors slid open and a familiar figure stepped out. And as she recognised him, he too caught sight of her and broke into a smile.

“It’s so good to see you again! Been more than ten years!” She felt his comforting warmth in their hug, and then they separated from each other.

“Nah.. it’s only been five.”

A hint of amusement passed over his face before he shrugged.

“Well… I’m not counting.”

“Neither am I.”

And as they walked into the cafe, she knew nothing much really has changed.

The Shower

He lay on his side in the bed, upper torso almost naked, wrapped in the sheets, scrolling on his phone. Straightening herself from unpacking, she walked over to where he was.

“I’ll go take a shower first.”

In response, he reached out and pulled her into bed and his arms. She gasped as she landed in his encircling warmth.

“I haven’t showered in a day… that’s unacceptable… I need to take a shower.”

“Okay… go shower.”

He loosened his embrace and for a moment she was uncaged. She remained where she was, gazing into his face, and his lips, corners curled in a slight smile.

Then, she leaned over and kissed him on his mouth, feeling the soft bristles above his upper lip as his tongue met hers and his lower lip, full against hers.

His arms came around her again as he smiled at her surprised gasp.

“You’ve had your chance.”

And then they were inseparable.

His arms were around her, maybe hers around him then… were his lips on hers or did they rove down her neck? She might have trailed her moist tongue down his chest, breathing warmth as she went…

Like each time in the past, she could not remember.

All she remembered that afternoon was the window was all along open, behind the facade of white curtains. And she blushed when he teased her about how everyone would have heard.

She could not remember.
But she would not forget.

Pruning Trees

This has been on my mind for a while now, since I saw the tree outside my apartment undergo some major pruning. I had felt sad, but I guess there’s more to rejoice.

“What’s going on?” I cried, rushing out into the garden.

He had a ladder against a tree and was at the topmost rung, perched and holding a saw, gazing up into the leafy arms. On the ground lay several piles of leaf-sprouting branches.

He saw me standing arms akimbo below and waved down at me, yelling, “I’m pruning the trees!”

“But why? They looked so beautiful with their crowns of green,” I pouted. “Now they look all ugly and bare!” I looked at the stumps of nothing against the bright blue skies and felt upset all over again.

“I feel like the trees have wasted all their efforts growing themselves out.”

“Yeah I know; they were glorious weren’t they?”

He came down from the ladder and stood beside me, looking up at the stumps too. “But pruning has way more benefits that outweigh this temporary ugliness.”

“Well yeah… I suppose…”

He glanced over at me sulking and laughed.

“Well, pruning helps to remove deadwood that hampers trees from growing to their best potential, and also helps to shape them and redirect their growth.”

He leaned the saw gently against the tree, then continued, gazing kindly at me.

“When they grow better, and in the right directions, they become healthier. At the same time, risks from falling branches are reduced while yield or quality of flowers and fruits are increased.”

“Yeah… I suppose you are right,” I replied grudgingly.

“That’s what you can look forward to. But it will take some time.” He patted me on the shoulder and winked. “But I assure you, it will be a magnificent sight to behold.”

And so I wait, for that magnificence to unfold.

I Want To Know You

I want to know you –
Your typical morning habits
What you totally hate eating
What you actually mean when
You don’t say a word, or do
Little things that often go
Unnoticed, except when time
Stands still, but time is
Never on our side, so
Before it’s too late
I want to know you.

Depths

Lead me to the
Depths of my soul, then
Undress it by layers till my
Purest form shows;

Protect it with the
Fortress of your might, then
Stay with me till the promise of
Eternal light.

Chanced

He smiled from behind his shades
Raised a brow, cocking his head
Asking if I was coming on;

Alas, he’s not the one I was
Waiting for, so I shook my head and
Waved with a smile bright as day

To which he waved and returned,
A tad wryly, yet a smile nonetheless
Chanced, before we pulled away.
